Plenty of people work when sick. In my office, the sick proudly display the latest box of macho-sounding cold or flu remedy on their desk as a sign they are slaving away. Not healthy but in these times you either work or risk being "chopped".

Worse, visit Tesco where staff don't even get sick pay for the initial days of an illness. Other employers increasingly do this too. And this is not to mention all the workers on zero hour contracts who get no benefits and rights whatsoever, chances are that anyone unemployed who gets a new job from JobCentre+ will find themselves shoved into a zero hours contract. This hyperflexibility is making many people ill but the government pushes hard for it.
