One at least of Blond's points has some validity. The postwar National Insurance Act took away the role of Friendly Societies, Trades Unions and Co-ops as providers, and appropriated all power to the State. Trade unions were undermined fatally - and left with no posture but industrial militancy on which to centre their appeal to members.

Will, I think this might be enlightening reading - I'm sure you're right that he doesn't discuss it. It would lead to some tricky questions as, in fact, it did on Channel 4 news just the other day.

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/27/opinion/27iht-edpabst.html for the original quotes I'm afraid I'm not sure how to access old editions of C4 news

Many of our most important liberties, such as Magna Carta, go back to medieval times, although of course this counts for little in New Labour's New Britain.

But Red Toryism does remind me of Disraeli's Young England, a romantic Tory movement that was also nostalgic for medieval times. Interestingly, its leadership largely consisted of aristocratic Old Etonians, although Disraeli (like Blond) was from a humbler background.

Of course Disraeli soon dumped Young England in his climb up the 'greasy pole' & became a cynical, hard headed realist.

I've heard Philip Blond speak on 3 or 4 occasions and I have to say that I've not once heard him talk about Islam so I think you might be being a bit harsh, Darius.

By all means correct me if you have specific quotes but even though I disagree with him, I think he's a world away from Nick Griffin.

Cheers,

Will
