Makes a nice change for social media pundits to be playing down its impact!

Though in this case it sounds like they may have gone too far, as the impact of events on TV is increasingly mediated via social media. You don't just watch a TV show; you get tweets, see Facebook status updates, watch a clip on YouTube the following day and so on.

Plus, in the local constituency campaigns where a close election will be decided, there is almost no TV coverage of the local campaign but plenty of scope for social media to have an impact (a point which I've expanded on at http://www.markpack.org.uk/tv-leaders-debates/ ).

I was at a media event this morning and Dan Roberts the Business Editor at the Guardian said pretty much the same thing and I'd probably agree. The campaign in the UK has harnessed social media in a significantly different way to the 2008 US Presidential campaign that was more of a social media campaign. But having TV Debates for the first time, plus the rules that the Lib-Dems receive just as much airtime as Labour and the Tories will ensure that the focus is on the TV.

That being said, Iain Martin the Deputy Editor of The Wall Street Journal Europe pointed out the Xmas No. 1 campaign last year. There is still room for a facebook page or a blogger to come out of the ether and do something pretty unique.
